Spring Forward Safely: Test Your Smoke and CO₂ Detectors This Season
As we set our clocks ahead for daylight saving time, it’s also time to take a few quick steps to keep your home safe. The start of spring is the perfect reminder to test your smoke and carbon monoxide (CO₂) detectors and replace their batteries if needed.
Why This Routine Matters
A working smoke or CO₂ detector can alert you to danger long before you might otherwise notice it. But these devices can fail silently if the batteries die or the sensors age out. Taking a few minutes each spring and fall to test and maintain them helps ensure they’ll be ready when you need them most.
Your Spring Safety Checklist
-
Test each detector by pressing the “test” button until you hear a loud alarm. If it doesn’t sound, replace the battery or the unit.
-
Replace batteries in all smoke and CO₂ detectors unless your devices have long-life or sealed batteries.
-
Check the expiration date. Smoke detectors typically last 10 years, and CO₂ detectors last 5 to 7 years. Replace any that are past their lifespan.
-
Clean the units. Gently vacuum or dust around the detectors to remove buildup that can block sensors.
-
Review your escape plan. Spring is a good time to remind everyone in your household where to go and what to do if an alarm goes off.
Stay Ahead of the Season
Spring brings fresh air and renewal, and it’s also a chance to refresh your home’s safety routine. Pair your clock change with a quick test of your alarms, and you’ll gain peace of mind that your home is ready for whatever the season brings.
